Elder, St. Xavier Set To Begin Sectional Play With Saturday Games

It was a successful postseason beginning for the La Salle and Moeller soccer teams, which posted victories Tuesday evening in the first round of Southwest District Division I sectional tournament play.  Elder and St. Xavier are hoping for the same fate as their colleagues when both schools begin their postseason journeys with matches Saturday afternoon.

La Salle (8-3-6) opened with a 1-0 win over Loveland Tuesday night at Kolping Park in the first round of the Division I Cincinnati 5 Sectional Tournament.  The Lancers advance to meet Sycamore in the sectional semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kolping Park.  La Salle has won or tied five of its last six matches.

Moeller also was victorious in its opening postseason match, knocking off Princeton, 5-1, in the Cincinnati 3 Sectional Tournament.  The Crusaders (5-5-7) move on to meet Anderson in the sectional semifinals at 3 p.m. Saturday at Turpin High School.  Anderson has not lost since September 26, recording four victories and one tie during its current unbeaten streak.

Elder and St. Xavier, which tied for the GCL South championship this fall with 2-1-3 league records, are preparing to play their first sectional tournament games Saturday.  Elder (11-1-4), the No. 2 seed in the Southwest District sectionals, will face Colerain at 3 p.m. Saturday Cincinnati 4 Sectional Tournament at the Panther Athletic Complex.  Colerain advanced with a 3-2 victory over Withrow on Tuesday.

St. Xavier (4-6-6) hosts Amelia in the second round of the Cincinnati 2 Sectional Tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday. Amelia advanced with a 2-1 overtime win over Little Miami in Tuesday’s opening round.  St. Xavier won the GCL South title outright last fall and then notched three consecutive tournament wins by shutout before losing to Lakota East, 1-0, in district play.
