St. Xavier, Moeller Fall To St. I, St. Ed’s In NE-SW Doubleheader

The trip to Northeast Ohio on Saturday started well for both St. Xavier and Moeller, but neither game ended with the outcome the two football teams had hoped for as St. Ignatius scored 34 unanswered points after trailing 13-0 to post a 34-20 victory at Byers Field in Parma, and then Lakewood St. Edward erased a 17-0 deficit after one quarter by holding Moeller scoreless on its way to a 49-17 victory at Lakewood High School.

St. Xavier jumped out to a 13-0 lead seconds into the second quarter, but it was a defensive stand at the St. Ignatius 1-yard line that seemed to turn the momentum in the game.  From that point, St. Ignatius (5-4) came alive offensively to score the final 10 points of the first half, and then a 39-yard pass from quarterback Dennis Grosel to receiver Calvin Grbac less than two minutes into the second half gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

The Bombers (5-4), who have now lost two straight, were held scoreless until their final play from scrimmage – when junior quarterback Sean Clifford scored on a 3-yard run.  Clifford finished the game going 21-of-37 for 175 yards and one interception.  Senior Sean Prophit led St. Xavier’s rushing attack, picking up 104 yards on 19 attempts, while junior Pete Rumpke carried just five times for 72 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown run.

Like St. Xavier, Moeller (4-5) jumped out early – holding a 17-0 lead after one quarter against St. Edward, the defending Division I state champion and the state’s No. 1-ranked team most of the season.  But the Crusaders, winners of two straight and looking for a key victory to enhance their chances of making the state playoffs, surrendered 49 unanswered points and nearly 500 yards total offense to St. Edward.

Quarterback Jimmy Keefe passed for 201 yards and three TDS, and Cole Gest ran for 144 yards and three scores to lead St. Edward (8-1).  Moeller, coming off consecutive come-from-behind wins at Elder (49-42) and last Saturday against St. Ignatius (55-52), was led by senior quarterback Thomas MacVittie, who passed for 229 yard and two TDs – one each to seniors Kyle Butz and Jake Hausmann, who each had four receptions.
