St. Xavier Falls To Lakota West In Sectional Final Tuesday

Elder and Moeller continued their postseason soccer journeys with victories in their respective sectional finals Tuesday night.  Elder knocked off rival Oak Hills, 2-0, in the Cincinnati Section 4 championship at Hamilton High School, while Moeller defeated Turpin, 2-2 (3-1 on penalty kicks) to capture the Cincinnati Section 3 championship at Princeton.  Both schools advance to the district tournament with games set for Saturday.

St. Xavier, the third Greater Catholic League South Division member to advance to a sectional final, lost to Lakota West, 4-1, in the Cincinnati Section 2 championship at Lakota East.  The Bombers end their season at 5-7-6.  Lakota West moves on to meet Moeller in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District 3 final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sycamore Stadium, which is located at Sycamore Junior High School.

Elder, which tied St. Xavier for the GCL South title this season, recorded its third consecutive shutout against Oak Hills to win its first sectional title since 2012.  The Panthers (13-1-4) have only allowed eight goals in their last eight matches, which include five victories and three ties.  Elder advances to meet Centerville (13-3-3) in the Southwest District 4 title game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakota East High School.

The Panthers, ranked No. 8 in the state by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, got first-half goals by senior Josh Hertsenberg and two-time GCL South Player of the Year Joey Sabato, the senior standout who scored with 21 seconds left in the first half.

Moeller led Turpin, the Eastern Cincinnati Conference champion, 2-0, at halftime, behind goals from senior forward Trevor Beckham and junior midfielder Matt Bugada.  But the Spartans (15-3-1) rallied to tie the score, 2-2, in regulation and the game eventually was decided on penalty kicks, with Moeller (7-5-7) prevailing, 3-1.  Senior Sam Frohman was in goal for the Crusaders.

This will be the second meeting this season between Moeller and Lakota West (12-6-1), with the Crusaders posting a 3-1 victory during the regular in a match played September 1 at West.  The Crusaders have been on a roll since recording a 3-1 victory over St. Xavier on October 6.  Including that game, Moeller is 4-0-2 in its last six matches entering Saturday’s district final.
