Elder, La Salle Start At Home, St. Xavier Set To Stay On Road

The Ohio High School Athletic Association today announced the first-round pairings for the state football playoffs that begin Friday night, and two of the three qualifiers  from the Greater Catholic League South Division – Elder and La Salle – will start their postseason journeys at home, while St. Xavier will open the playoffs be hitting the road for the fourth consecutive week.

Here is a look at the first-round games for GCL South teams:

La Salle (8-2), the defending Division II state champion and winner of 22 of its last 25 games, will host Vandalia Butler (7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday night at Lancer Stadium.  La Salle is hoping for a repeat of the 2014 state playoffs, when the Lancers rolled to five straight victories – winning by an average margin of 28.5 points – to win the school’s first state football championship. La Salle is the No. 1 seed in Division II, Region 6.

Elder (7-3), which earned a share of the GCL South Division championship with its 21-7 win at La Salle last Friday, will host Fairfield (8-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Pit in Price Hill.  The Panthers are the No. 5 seed in Division I, Region 2 and, as a result, will face a Fairfield team that enters postseason play riding a four-game winning streak, including a 20-16 win at Hamilton last Friday that clinched the Indians’ postseason berth.

St. Xavier (6-4), the No. 9 seed in Region 2, hits the road for the fourth consecutive week – traveling to Greater Columbus to face No. 8 seed Gahanna Lincoln (7-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday.  This will be the fourth consecutive week that the Bombers have been on the road, ending the regular season with three straight games away from home, the last a 20-10 victory at Louisville St. Xavier last Friday evening.
