Crusaders Fall To No. 1 Mason In Regional Championship

Senior forward Evan Couchot scored the game’s lone goal to lead unbeaten and No. 1 seed Mason into the Division I soccer state semifinals and, in the process, end Moeller’s five-match postseason winning streak with a 1-0 victory in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Region 4 championship game Saturday afternoon at Lakota West High School.

Mason (19-0-2), which has now recorded 16 shutouts and allowed just six goals all season, advances to meet Region 3 champion Hilliard Davidson (17-1-3) in the state semifinals Wednesday night at a site to be determined.  Davidson defeated Dublin Jerome, 2-1, in Saturday’s regional title match.  Mason is making its third appearance in four years in the state semifinals, also having won the 2013 state championship.

The Comets also defeated a Greater Catholic League South Division team in the regional semifinals, knocking off Elder, 5-2, on Wednesday.   That loss was only the second defeat this season for the Panthers, who tied St. Xavier for the GCL South title and finished 14-2-4 overall.

Moeller entered the playoffs with a 4-5-7 record, but the Crusaders came alive to string together five straight wins – including a 1-0 win over Anderson, a victory over Eastern Cincinnati Conference champion Turpin on penalty kicks, a 3-1 triumph over Lakota West, and then a 2-1 overtime defeat of Beavercreek in the regional semifinals.  Moeller ends its season at 9-6-7.
