Elder, St. Xavier Look To Take Next Steps In Division I FB Playoffs Tonight

Senior quarterback Nick Watson completed 7-of-9 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns to help La Salle take another step toward defending its state football championship with a convincing 49-13 victory over Lima Senior in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II, Region 6 semifinals Friday night at Kettering Fairmont’s Roush Stadium.

The win moves La Salle (10-2), the region’s No. 1 seed and winners of seven straight postseason games and 24 of its last 27 games the last two seasons, into the regional final to be played at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at a neutral site to be announced Sunday by the OHSSA.  Coach Jim Hilvert’s team will face No. 2 seed Kings (11-1), winner of eight straight including a 47-13 win over Turpin in the regional semifinals Friday night at Lakota West.

Elder and St. Xavier, colleagues in the Greater Catholic League South Division with La Salle, look to extend their postseason runs tonight.  Elder (8-3) faces Hilliard Davidson (9-2) in a Division I, Region 2 quarterfinal matchup at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, while St. Xavier (7-4) looks to avenge a 13-10 overtime regular-season defeat to Colerain (10-1) when the two schools meet at Mason High School’s Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium.

Both games kick off at 7.

La Salle actually trailed early against Lima Senior, before senior running back Jeremy Larkin scored on a 23-yard run to make it 7-7 with 2:38 left in the opening quarter.  From there, the Lancers proceeded to score 42 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 49-7 lead  with 35 seconds left in the half.   Watson had quite the quarter to remember, tossing four TD passes and scoring on a 10-yard run.

Watson hooked up with four different Lancers on TD passes in the second quarter - Christian Turner, 34 yards; Larkin, 49; , Ben Braybender, 53; and  Josh Gebing, 19.  La Salle finished the game with 21 first downs and 476 total yards.  Larkin led La Salle in rushing, carrying   13 times for 125 yards and two TDs.  Larkin has now scored eight TDs in the Lancers’ first two playoff games, including five in an opening 52-14 win over Vandalia Butler.

Elder looks to win its fourth consecutive game when it meets Hilliard Darby (9-2) tonight.  The No. 5-seed Panthers rallied twice from 11 points down last Saturday to defeat Fairfield, 50-42, at The Pit in Price Hill – scoring the game’s final 19 points in the last seven minutes.  Elder is led by senior quarterback Peyton Ramsey, a two-way threat who has thrown for 2,385 yards and 24 TDs and also rushed for 1,003 yards and 12 scores.

St. Xavier is vying to knock off Colerain in the state playoffs for the second consecutive year.  Last October, the No. 9-seed Bombers built a double-digit lead in the first half and emerged with a 29-21 win over the Cardinals in the second round.  St. Xavier advanced to tonight’s regional quarterfinals with a 28-14 win at Gahanna Lincoln last Saturday behind 182 yards rushing and two TDs from senior Sean Prophit.
