Panthers Begin Tough Stretch With Win in Mercy Health Tipoff Classic

Senior guard Frankie Hofmeyer scored a game-high 15 points, including three of his team’s five three-point goals, as Elder began a stretch of six games in 12 days with a 57-42 victory over Northwest Friday night at The Pit.  The game was part of the second Mercy Health Tipoff Classic, and Hofmeyer was named his team’s most valuable player. Hofmeyer scored 27 points in a season-opening win over Winton Woods on Tuesday.

Against Northwest, Hofmeyer was joined in double figures by senior Nick Hall, who added 13 points for Elder (2-0) – ranked No. 2 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll.  Senior Peyton Ramsey came off the bench to score nine points.  The Panthers, who are still working their football players back into the mix after advancing to the second round of the state playoffs, travel to No. 8 Walnut Hills (5-1) for a game tonight.

Coach Joe Schoenfeld’s team plays five more games between now and Tuesday, December 22.   That stretch includes a home game Tuesday against Purcell Marian, the No. 1 team in Divisions II-VI that handed Walnut Hills its lone loss (70-57 on November 28), and games against Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy next Friday, Withrow a week from today, and Greater Miami Conference member Hamilton on December 22.

Elder was the lone Greater Catholic League South Division team in action Friday night, but league teams have a busy schedule today.  Besides Elder at Walnut Hills, La Salle (1-0) hosts Hamilton, Moeller (2-0) plays Mt. Healthy, and St. Xavier (1-2) travels to Dayton to take on Thurgood Marshall.  The Bombers tip off at 6, while the other three games all are scheduled to start at 7:30 this evening.
