Moeller Wins Saturday Opener In Beach Ball Classic

GCL South Hoop Teams Prepare For Holiday Tournaments

Guards Trey McBride and Keegan McDowell each scored 21 points to lead Moeller to a convincing 86-49 victory over Mullins, S.C. in the opening game of the Beach Ball Classic at Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Saturday.  The Crusaders - No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll -  play their second game in the event today, while the other three Greater Catholic League South Division teams are scheduled for holiday tournament openers Monday.

Moeller (7-0), aided by 10 assists from senior guard Nate Georgeton in the win, advances to play Seton Hall Prep from West Orange, N.J.  at 5:15 p.m. today.   Seton Hall (4-0) won its Beach Ball Classic opener, 78-41, over St. James, S.C. Against Mullins, Moeller benefited from both a balanced offense, with 13 Crusaders scoring, and a strong inside presence, outrebounding Mullins, 37-22, led by a team-high seven boards from Riley Voss.

All four GCL South teams are entered in holiday tournaments.  No. 2 Elder (7-0) will attempt to defend its title in the in the Fort Lauderdale Beach Holiday Classic being held at Westminster Academy beginning Monday.  No. 3 La Salle (4-0) is vying for a strong performance in the Kingdom of the Sun, to be played at Vanguard High School in Ocala, Fla.  The Lancers open against Lakewood Ranch (10-2) from Bradenton, Fla. at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

St. Xavier (2-4), which has lost four games by a total of 12 points (the latest a 39-38 loss to Lakota West on Wednesday at St. Xavier), will attempt to snap a two-game losing streak when the Bombers open the St. Pius X Christmas Classic against McGill-Toolen from Mobile, Ala.  Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. Monday.  The games are being played at St. Pius X Catholic High School located in Chamblee, Ga., which is approximately 15 minutes from Atlanta.

The Classic is regarded as one of the nation’s premier Catholic school tournaments.
