League Teams All Win Tuesday, Prepare For Wednesday Games

Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams went 3-of-3 in holiday tournament games Tuesday.  Elder and La Salle both remained unbeaten on the season and advanced in the winner’s brackets of two prestigious Florida showcases, while St. Xavier recorded a victory in the St. Pius X Christmas Classic, and Moeller prepared to return to action today in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Here is a look at the GCL South games played Tuesday:

Elder 58, Sidwell Friends, D.C. 46 – Senior guard Frankie Hofmeyer scored a game-high 25 points as Elder remained perfect this season while also winning its second game in two days at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Holiday Classic at Westminster Academy.  Hofmeyer also nailed four of the Panthers’ seven three-point goals, while senior Joey Sabato recorded 10 assists, and seniors Ryan Custer and Peyton Ramsey each had five rebounds.

Elder (9-0), back to defend its 2014 tournament championship, advances to meet host Westminster Academy (9-3) at 7:30 tonight.  Westminster moved on with a convincing 89-49 win over Westwood Christian from Miami, Fla.  Elder knocked off Westminster Academy, 65-62, in the title game last year behind three players in double figures – including 13 from Hofmeyer.

La Salle 48, Blanche Ely, Fla. 35 – Junior guards C.J. Fleming and Tre Crigler scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, to lead La Salle to another win at the Kingdom of the Sun in Ocala, Fla. Fleming, who leads the GCL South in scoring averaging 22.7 points, and Crigler each knocked down one three-pointer to help the Lancers build a 26-18 halftime lead and remain unbeaten.

La Salle (6-0) advances to the winner’s bracket semifinals against Lake Highland Prep (9-3) from Orlando, Fla. at 8 p.m. today.  Lake Highland Prep defeated St. Michael’s from Toronto, Canada, 74-63, to advance.  The championship game is set for 8 p.m. Thursday, with host Vanguard facing Dill

St. Xavier 53, St. Joseph’s Catholic, S.C. 27 – A day after struggling with one of its worst shooting performances of the season, St. Xavier nailed 23-of-38 field goals (60.5 percent) – including making 5-of-8 three-pointers – to post a win on day two of the St. Pius X Christmas Classic in Alpharetta, Ga.  The Bombers (3-5)  were strong from the start, outscoring St. Joseph’s, 20-8, in the first quarter to take control.

St. Xavier utilized balanced scoring, with senior guard Matt Wittrock leading the way with 12 points.  In all, 10 Bombers scored – with junior guard Greg Ruppert chipping in seven points and a team-high six assists and junior center Gage Hammann adding six points and a team-best seven rebounds.  St. Xavier will play Cardinal Newman from Columbia, S.C. in the Bombers’ final game in the event.  Tipoff is 1 this afternoon.

Moeller In Beach Ball Classic – Moeller returns to the court today at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., just three days after the Crusaders suffered their first loss of the season – falling 39-33 to unbeaten Seaton Hall Prep from West Orange, N.J.  Moeller (7-1) is set to take on St. Francis from Alpharetta, Ga. at noon today.  The Beach Ball Classic concludes Thursday with five games on the schedule.
