La Salle Falls In Kingdom of Sun Final; Moeller Beats Mater Dei

La Salle and Moeller both wrapped up successful holiday basketball tournament runs Thursday for members of the Greater Catholic League South Division.  La Salle advanced to the championship game of the Kingdom of the Sun in Ocala, Fla., losing to Dillard from Fort Lauderdale in the final, the Lancers’ first loss this season; Moeller, playing its final game of the prestigious Beach Ball Classic, knocked off Mater Dei, Calif., to finish fifth.

Elder and St. Xavier, the other two GCL South schools, completed their holiday hoop events a day earlier.  Elder (10-0) successfully defended its title in the Fort Lauderdale Beach Holiday Classic by going 3-0, while St. Xavier won two of three games in the St. Pius X Christmas Classic in Alpharetta, Ga.  The four GCL South schools return to Cincinnati with a combined 30-7 record overall, including 11-3 mark in holiday showcase events.

Here is a look at the GCL South games played Thursday:

Dillard (FL) 49, La Salle  42 – The Lancers came within one win of earning a Kingdom of the Sun championship, as Dillard handed coach Dan Fleming’s team its first loss of the season in the Kingdom of the Sun final played at Vanguard High School.  La Salle, playing without leading scorer C.J. Fleming, was vying to join host Vanguard High School as the only schools in the event’s 42-year history to win three tournament titles.

La Salle (7-1) led 23-22 before Dillard’s Bryce Oliver scored just before halftime to make it 24-23.  The Lancers trailed Dillard (12-5) by as many as 11 points in the second half before putting together a late charge.  Senior guard Jeremy Larkin and junior guard Tre Crigler were both named to the all-tournament team, while Lancers senior guard Kegan Hudson received the Kingdom of the Sun “Mr. Hustle” award during postgame ceremonies.

Moeller 43, Mater Dei (CA) 40 – The Crusaders won the fifth-place game against nationally ranked Mater Dei, ending its trek to the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach S.C. with a 3-1 record.  Moeller’s lone setback was to Seton Hall Prep, N.J., which finished third.  Against highly regarded Mater Dei, Moeller got 12 points and six rebounds from senior guard Trey McBride and 11 points and six rebounds from junior forward Riley Voss.

Moeller (9-1) led by as many as 10 points at 37-27, but Mater Dei (14-2) came back to cut the margin to one, 37-36, before Voss converted a layup with 1:45 remaining to make it 39-36.  Mater Dei (14-1) again cut into the Crusaders’ lead, making it 39-38, but Moeller put the game away by knocking down four straight free throws to end the game – two by Voss and then the final two from junior guard Keegan McDowell.

All games were played at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
