Elder, Moeller Head South To Face Northern Kentucky’s Top Teams

All four Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams take the court tonight in a final tune-up before league play begins Friday, and there is no shortage of intriguing matchups in the four games.  Highlighting tonight’s schedule is an interstate showdown between the top-ranked teams in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky according to The Enquirer’s weekly coaches’ polls.

Elder (10-0), No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll after returning home from a second straight title in the Fort Lauderdale Beach Holiday Classic, travels to Union, Ky. to face Cooper (11-1), No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Northern Kentucky poll.  The Jaguars, who opened the season with a win over No. 2 Covington Catholic, have won nine straight games since a road loss at Holy Cross on December 11.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at Cooper.

Moeller (9-1), No. 3 behind Elder and La Salle in the rankings after winning three of four games (including a victory over national ranked Mater Dei) in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in the prestigious Beach Ball Classic over the holiday, travels to Park Hills, Ky. to play Covington Catholic (9-4) at 7:30.  CovCath, which won the Kentucky state title two years ago and advanced to the state semifinals last season, went 2-1 in the Suncoast Holiday Classic.

La Salle (7-1) is on the road tonight, playing at Hughes (1-7) at 7:30.  The Lancers traveled to Ocala, Fla. over the holiday break and finished second in the Kingdom of the Sun – going 3-0 before falling to Dillard, Fla. in the final.  La Salle played that game without junior guard C.J. Fleming, the Lancers’ leading scorer who was injured in the semifinals. Fleming is going to try and play tonight, according to La Salle coach Dan Fleming.

St. Xavier (4-5) returns home riding a two-game winning streak, with victories in its last two games at the St. Pius X Christmas Classic in Alpharetta, Ga. over the break.  But it won’t be easy for the Bombers, who host GCL Co-Ed member Roger Bacon (6-4) at 7:30.  The Spartans, ranked No. 2 behind Purcell Marian in The Enquirer’s Division III poll, are coming off two losses by a combined four points in a holiday trek to South Carolina.

Tonight’s games are the final tune-ups before the first night of play Friday in the GCL South.  Opening night, too, features a matchup between Greater Cincinnati’s top-ranked teams when La Salle travels to The Pit to face Elder.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m..  Moeller will host St. Xavier in the other GCL South opener, also at 7:30, with the Crusaders trying to earn at least a share of the league championship for the fourth straight year.

Elder, La Salle and Moeller tied for the league title last season, all at 4-2.
