State’s Top Wrestlers To Compete This Weekend In Annual Showcase

Elder High School will welcome some of the state’s top wrestlers when it hosts the 2016 Catholic Invitational Tournament this weekend at Elder’s Memorial Fieldhouse on its Price Hill campus.  Twenty eight schools in two divisions, representing the majority of the top Catholic-school programs in Ohio, are scheduled to compete in this annual wrestling showcase that begins with opening matches at 10 this morning.

Competition through the quarterfinals is scheduled for today, with the semifinals and championship matches in each weight class set for Sunday.
Finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.  Single-session tickets are available for $10 for adults and $5 for students.  All-session passes also are available.  Elder High School is located at 3900 Vincent Avenue, just minutes from downtown Cincinnati.

Greater Catholic League South Division members Moeller and Elder should be among the favorites in the 16-team division for big schools.  Moeller, led by a talented lineup that includes 2015 state placers Jacoby Ward (third time) and Jack Meyer, is ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area poll.  Elder, with five wrestlers who have qualified for the state tournament, is No. 4. In the latest rankings  St. Xavier also will compete in the CIT.

GCL Co-Ed members Badin and Purcell Marian are the Cincinnati representatives in the 12-school, small-school division.
