La Salle Defeats No. 1 Purcell Marian; St. Xavier Rally Falls Just Short

Junior guard C.J. Fleming scored a team-high 19 points and senior guard Tre Crigler added 14, including four of the Lancers’ 10 three-point goals, to help La Salle defeat Purcell Marian at La Salle in one of two games involving Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams Saturday night.  In the other game, St. Xavier put together a strong fourth quarter but fell short against Oak Hills, 53-47, at St. Xavier.

The win was the fourth straight for La Salle (12-2), ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll.  Senior Jeremy Larkin also was in double figures with 11 including three-pointers, and senior guard Kegan Hudson added nine points on three three-pointers for La Salle – which built a 30-23 halftime lead.  The loss was just the second this season for talented Purcell Marian, No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division III poll.

GCL South member Elder is the other team to defeat the Cavaliers, winning 59-50 at The Pit back on December 15. Jamel Howard and Payton Smith each scored 11 points to lead Purcell Marian against La Salle.  Up next for the Lancers is a road game at Oak Hills at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Speaking of Oak Hills, the Highlanders are making their way through the GCL South.  After posting a 44-41 home win over Elder last Tuesday, Oak Hills traveled to St. Xavier last night and built a 13-point lead after three quarters.  The Bombers rallied in the fourth, outscoring Oak Hills, 21-14, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the No. 6 Highlanders (10-4), who are now 2-1 against the GCL South (the lone loss coming at Moeller, 42-39).

Senior guard Johnny Bubenhofer, St. Xavier’s leading scorer, was held to eight points, but the Bombers got a big game from senior guard Hunter Lampley – who scored 19 points, hitting 7-of-12 field goals and knocking down four of his team’s eight three-pointers.  Junior forward Daniel Keyes came off the bench to add 10 for St. Xavier (4-10), which has dropped five straight.  Ryan Batte and Nick Deifel each scored 16 to pace Oak Hills.

No. 2 Moeller (13-1), which has a one-lead atop the GCL South standings after just two league games, travels to Greater Columbus for a non-conference game Monday.  The Crusaders, who have won their first two league games, play Westerville Central (5-6) on Monday’s holiday at 4 p.m. at Otterbein University.  No. 1 Elder, which also did not play Saturday, is off until Friday – when it travels to St. Xavier for a GCL South game.
