Wrestlers From GCL South Schools Earn Six Championships

Moeller and host Elder won four and two weight-class championships, respectively, to earn the top two spots in the 16-team, large-school division at the 2016 Catholic Invitational Tournament held over the weekend at Elder High School’s Memorial Fieldhouse.  Moeller seniors Jack Meyer and Joe Hensley captured the 220- and 285-pound classes to enable the Crusaders to edge Elder in the final standings, 249 to 232.

St. Xavier finished seventh, with 91.5 points.

Moeller, ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s latest Division I area coaches’ poll, pulled ahead of No. 4 Elder for good when Meyer won his final.  It was varsity victory No. 100 for Meyer, who is now 25-3 this season, helping the Crusaders win the 55th edition of the annual Catholic schools showcase.  Hensley also won his weight class, and is now 23-4 this season.  Eleven of Moeller’s 12 wrestlers placed in the tournament.

Moeller also won championships with Jake Thompson at 128 pounds and Jacoby Ward at 152.  Elder’s Robby Oswald (160) and Ti’Ric Evans (170) each won championships in their respective weight classes.  Samuel Williams of the Panthers finished second at 145, as did Antonio McCloud at 182.  Elder led the team standings by one point after Evans’ win at 170.  Ten of Elder’s 13 entrants placed in the CIT.

Elder’s Charles Sanders finished third at 152, but had the most pins of any wrestling in the CIT with five.  Sanders’ lone defeat was to weight-class champion Jacoby Ward of Moeller, who is a three-time placers at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament.
