La Salle Win Streak at Six; Elder Defeats Western Hills

Guards Tre Crigler and Kegan Hudson each connected on three of La Salle’s 10 three-point goals, helping the Lancers pull away in the second half for a 58-43 victory over Turpin in a  non-conference basketball game Tuesday night at La Salle.  Elder, the other Greater Catholic League South Division team in action, scored 19 or more points in each of the first three quarters to earn a 71-43 victory over Western Hills at Elder.

The victory was the sixth straight for La Salle (14-2), ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll.  Junior guard C.J. Fleming led La Salle (14-2) with 14 points, while Crigler and Hudson each added 11 for the Lancers – who held a 29-27 halftime lead over Turpin (6-10).  La Salle, now 6-0 at home this season and 7-1 this month, returns to GCL South play when it hosts Elder Friday.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at La Salle’s Bill Cady Court.

No. 3 Elder, playing without injured starters Frankie Hofmeyer and Peyton Ramsey, had 11 players score against Western Hills.  Senior forward Ryan Custer led the way with 15 points and six rebounds for the Panthers – who hit 29-of-54 shots (53.7 percent) to improve to a perfect 8-0 at The Pit.  Elder (13-3) also finished with 37 rebounds and 11 blocked shots, with senior center Nate Roell grabbing eight boards and blocking four shots.

Moeller – No. 1 in The Enquirer’s latest rankings and No. 3 in the Associated Press Division I state poll again this week, and St. Xavier did not play Tuesday.  The two play at 7:30 Friday at St. Xavier’s Berning Gymnasium.  Moeller (15-1, 2-0), which has won eight straight games, won the first meeting against St. Xavier (5-11, 0-3), 64-47, at Moeller on January 8.
