La Salle Knocks Down 17 Three-Pointers To Extend Winning Streak

La Salle knocked down a season-high 17 three-point shots, including five from Tre Crigler and three each from C.J. Fleming and Jeremy Larkin, to extend its winning streak to eight games with a 69-44 win over Walnut Hills Saturday night at La Salle.  The Lancers, ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll, take that streak into a Greater Catholic League South Division showdown with No. 1 Moeller at home Tuesday night.

In Saturday’s other game involving a GCL South Division team, St. Xavier trailed by only one point, 36-35, at halftime before Hamilton outscored the Bombers, 27-9, in the third quarter to take command.  The Big Blue were led by senior guard Ryan Robinson, who scored a game-high 37 points on 12-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-7 three-pointers, to give Hamilton at 69-55 victory at Hamilton.

Crigler, a junior guard, led La Salle with 20 points, while Fleming – also a junior guard – added 19 for the Lancers, who jumped out to a 34-21 lead against No. 8 Walnut Hills (13-4), the Eastern Cincinnati Conference leader which entered the game riding a five-game winning streak.  Larkin, a senior guard, also was in double figures for La Salle with 12 points.  The Lancers take a perfect 8-0 home record into Tuesday’s game with Moeller.

The rare Tuesday GCL South matchup, rescheduled after a projected winter storm caused school officials to postpone the game on its originally scheduled date of January 22, is between the league’s hottest two teams in Moeller, which is 16-1 overall, 3-0 in first place in the GCL South and riding a nine-game winning streak, and La Salle, which is 16-2, 2-1 and in second place in the league and unbeaten in its last seven.

It will be a packed Bill Cady Court at La Salle, as the game was a sellout previously.  Fans holding tickets should use those for admittance to this game.  The Lancers have won 15 straight games at home, going unbeaten at home last season.  La Salle’s last loss at home came on February 15, 2014, to GCL South rival Elder, 56-53.

Senior guard Henry Kuechly came off the record team highs of 18 points and eight rebounds for St. Xavier against Hamilton (8-10), which has now won two straight.  The Bombers (5-13), who also got 12 points from sophomore forward Bobby Jefferson and 10 from senior guard Johnny Bubenhofer, have dropped three in a row and eight of their last nine.

Hamilton (8-10) nailed 24-of-37 field goals (64.9 percent), including 7-of-11 from three-point range.  Robinson is the leading scorer in the Greater Miami Conference, averaging 20.2 points per game.  His 37 points are a season high, surpassing the 30 he scored in a 62-50 win at Harrison on January 16.  Robinson has scored 14 or more points in all but two games this season.
