GCL, GGCL Diving Finals Scheduled For Today

Competition To Be Held At UC’s Keating Aquatic Center

The 2016 Greater Catholic League and Girls’ Greater Catholic League Division I Swimming and Diving Championships get underway later today with the diving competition beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati’s Keating Aquatic Center.  The meet resumes Wednesday, with the swimming competition scheduled to be held at Keating Natatorium on the St. Xavier High School campus.

St. Xavier and  St. Ursula Academy are the defending league champions.  The AquaBombers have won seven consecutive Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I state championships, 16 of the last 17 state titles, and a record 36 state crowns overall.  St. Ursula defeated Ursuline Academy, 442-389, in last year’s GGCL competition and went on to post an impressive runner-up finish to Upper Arlington in the state meet.

Senior Drew Fitzgerald of St. Xavier is the defending diving champion in the GCL, finishing with a score of 249.45 at last year’s meet to finish ahead of Josh Knapke of St. Xavier (214.9) and Jake Wells of Elder (202.60).   Sophomore Grace Menke of Mount Notre Dame Academy returns to defend the GGCL diving title.  She finished with a score of 272.35, ahead of Audrey Capannari of St. Ursula (251.75) and MND’s Teagan Moravek (248.20).
