Grapplers From Co-Ed, South Divisions Hit The Mats This Weekend

Wrestlers from the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed and South Divisions, 10 schools in all, will take to the mats tonight and Saturday when the GCL Wrestling Championships take place on all three levels at Bishop Fenwick High School, located at 4855 Ohio Route 122 just minutes off Interstate-75 in Franklin.  The freshman and junior varsity competition begins at 6 tonight, with the varsity matches starting at 10 Saturday morning.

Admission each day is $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens.

Moeller returns to defend the league championship.  The Crusaders narrowly defeated GCL South rival Elder, 254.5-240.0, in last year’s league championships held at St. Xavier High School.  Moeller also bested Elder the previous year, 286.5-198.5, at Fenwick.  Elder, though, is coming off a close 32-27 win over Moeller on Wednesday night in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Dual Team Wrestling Region 8 final at Elder.

That match wasn’t decided until the final weight class.

Elder and Moeller will be joined in the GCL meet by South colleagues La Salle and St. Xavier.  The four GCL South members will compete against wrestlers from the six GCL Co-Ed members in Archbishop McNicholas, host Bishop Fenwick, Dayton Carroll, Kettering Alter, Purcell Marian and Roger Bacon high schools.  Wrestlers will compete in a bracket format, with placement points to the top eight in each weight class.

Defending league champions from the GCL South, listed with the weight class they won last February, include Chucky Lipps of Elder (106 pounds), Austin Murphy of Elder (113), Corey Shie of La Salle (132), Jacoby Ward of Moeller (138), Robby Oswald of Elder (152), Ti’Ric Evans of Elder (160), Brett Bryant of Moeller (170),  Sam Wyche of Moeller (182), and Joe Hensley of Moeller (285).
