Panthers To Begin Tournament Against Perennial State Power St. Edward

Elder, fresh of winning the Region 8 and Greater Catholic League championships in the last two weeks, is set to take on other top teams from around the state in the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Dual Team Tournament being held Sunday at St. John Arena on The Ohio State University in Columbus.  The Panthers are one of eight Division I teams competing in the event.

Coach Jason Roush’s team, which won the GCL Wrestling Championships held last Saturday at Bishop Fenwick High School, face No. 1 seed Lakewood St. Edward in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Sunday.  Should No. 8 seed Elder knock off St. Edward, the Panthers will advance to meet the winner of No. 5 Massillon Perry and No. 4 Fairfield, the other Greater Cincinnati qualifier, in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m.

The state dual finals are set for 7:30 p.m.

Elder, ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll, looks to continue a successful season at the state duals.  The Panthers defeated Oak Hills, St. Xavier, Harrison and perennial GCL and regional power Moeller to win the Region 8 duals and advance to the state tournament.  Elder’s 32-27 win over Moeller was a big win for the Panthers, setting the stage for Elder to edge Moeller again at the GCL championships 10 days later.
