Top-Seeded Lakewood St. Edward Beats Panthers in Quarterfinals

Lakewood St. Edward, which entered Sunday as the top-seeded team among the eight Division I team entrants, won 12 of 14 matches to defeat Elder, 57-9, in a quarterfinal match of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Dual Team Tournament at St. John Arena on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus.

St. Edward went on to win the title, its second team crown since 2013, by defeating Massillon Perry, 49-10, in the semifinals and Elyria, 49-22, in the finals.  Perry eliminated Fairfield, the Region 7 winner and other Greater Cincinnati team entered in the event, by a score of  34-24 in the quarterfinals.  Including state titles earned at the individual tournament, St. Edward now has 30 state championships – the most among OHSAA member schools.

Sophomores Chucky Lipps and Ti’Ric Evans won matches for Elder, ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll.  Lipps won a decision at 113 pounds over Cade Hepner of St. Edward, who did not finish, while Evans won a 6-3 decision over Jared Leidich at 170.

Elder will now join the other three Greater Catholic League South Division teams and compete in the Division I Sectional Tournament to be held Friday and Saturday at Hamilton and Lebanon high schools.  The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Southwest District Tournament to take place January 26-27 at Trent Arena in Kettering.
