Moeller Opens GCL South Postseason With Win

St. X In Action Tonight, With Elder And La Salle Set To Play Saturday

Junior guard Keegan McDowell scored a team-high 14 points, helping Moeller open the game on a 15-2 run on its way to a 59-40 victory over Sycamore in the first round of the Cincinnati 3 Sectional basketball tournament Thursday night at Hamilton High School.  The victory extended Moeller’s winning streak to four games and advances the Crusaders to a second-round game against Winton Woods at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The other three Greater Catholic League South Division teams open postseason play tonight and Saturday.  St. Xavier (5-16) plays Withrow in the Cincinnati 1 Sectional at 7:30 tonight at Lakota West.  Elder and La Salle play a doubleheader Saturday as part of the Cincinnati 2 Sectional.  Elder (17-4) meets Edgewood in the first game at 6 p.m., followed by La Salle (18-3) versus Western Hills at 7:30.  Both games also are at Lakota West.

Moeller (20-3) was able to get past Sycamore for the second straight year in sectional play, having won 55-19 last February.  Seniors Sam McCracken and Trey McBride each added 12 points for the Crusaders, who extended their lead to as many as 20 points in the third quarter.   Moeller is ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press Division I state poll, with GCL South colleague Elder at No. 3.
