AquaBombers, Crusaders Post Impressive Wins In Sectional Events

St. Xavier and Moeller head into Saturday’s Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Division I Swimming Championships coming off impressive wins in sectional competition last weekend.  St. Xavier won 11 of 12 events to win the Cincinnati sectional held at Keating Natatorium on its campus, while Moeller outdistanced the competition to capture the Mason sectional at Mason High School.

Qualifiers from both sectionals advance to the district meet, which begins at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.  One thing is for certain – the Greater Catholic League South Division, led by St. Xavier, will be well represented.  The AquaBombers won 11 of 12 events at Keating to extend its sectional streak of wins to 46 years.  St. Xavier swimmers were first or second in six of nine individual events.

St. Xavier finished with 686.5 points, followed by runner-up Walnut Hills with 281.5.  Every St. Xavier entry scored, with 47 of the 48 in the top eight and all St. Xavier swimmers advancing to the district meet.  In the individual events, the top 32 times from the four sections advance to districts, while the top 25 times in relay events move on to Oxford. St. Xavier has won seven straight state titles and 17 of the last 18.

Moeller also was impressive at the district meet, finishing with 437 points to finish ahead of Sycamore, 338.5, and Mason, 326.  Moeller swimmers finished first in five individual events, two each by Cooper Hodge and Will McCullough and one by Jacob Peloquin, and three relay events.  Hodge, the GCL South Swimmer of the Year, won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke.  McCullough finished first in the 50 and 100 Freestyle events.
