GCL South Schools Well Represented In Today’s Semifinal Round

Elder, the Greater Catholic League South Division wrestling champion, holds a slim lead after day one of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Sectional Wrestling Championships at Lebanon High School, while the other three GCL South members are among the top five schools entering this morning’s sectional semifinals at both Hamilton and Lebanon High Schools.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. at both locations, with Elder holding a two-point advantage over Fairfield, 91.0 to 89.0, at Lebanon after the Panthers advanced 11 wrestlers on to the semifinals.  Moeller, which is currently third with 68.0 points, will send eight to the semifinal round – including senior Jacoby Ward, the GCL South Wrestler of the Year, who moves on at 152 pounds.  Ward is a three-time state placer.

It was a solid showing, too, for both La Salle and St. Xavier – which are competing in the sectional tournament at Hamilton.  The Lancers are in third place after Friday’s opening session, with 70.0 Points.   St. Xavier is fifth, at 44.0, with Mason leading the 13-school sectional with 107.0 points.  La Salle advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals, while St. Xavier had five move on to today’s second session.

Tickets for the morning sessions, which begin at 9 at both locations, are $6.  Tickets are $7 to this afternoon’s finals at both Hamilton and Lebanon, with the sessions scheduled to start at approximately 1:30.  Here are the GCL South wrestlers who have advanced to the semifinals, listed by school and the sectional in which they are competing.  The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Southwest District Championships.
