AquaBombers’ Sobolewski Wins Three Events; Moeller Second At Miami

St. Xavier junior Luke Sobolewski won two individual events and was part of a record-setting relay team to help seven-time defending state champion St. Xavier roll to victory in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Division I Swimming and Diving Championships that concluded Saturday at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Natatorium in Oxford.

Sobolewski swam to victory in the 100 backstroke, finishing ahead of sophomore teammate Justin Grender in a record time of 48.92 seconds, and also won the 100 butterfly in 48.78, ahead of Moeller junior Jacob Peloquin.  Sobolewski and Grender teamed with junior Dillon Froass and sophomore Nicholas Perera to set a meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.2, besting the 1:32.12 set by St. Xavier in 2000.

St. Xavier, which won all three relay events and also got a district title in the 500 freestyle from junior Grant House, finished well ahead of the competition with 559.0 points.  Greater Catholic League South Division member Moeller, which finished second in two of the three relay events to qualify for state, was second with 238.5 points, followed by Centerville (206.5), Mason (143.0) and Walnut Hills (124.6) rounding out the top five.

House, swimming the 500 for the first time at the district level, also was part of two winning relay teams for St. Xavier – winning the 200 and 400 freestyle relays with teammates Grender, junior Charles Leibson and senior Matt Slabe.  The group swam the 400 freestyle relay in a record time of 3:04.62, finishing ahead of the Crusaders – who also qualified for the state meet in the process.

House is the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.  He did qualify for state in the 200 with a second-place finish at the district meet, in a time of 1:38.27.  House did not swim in the 100, but Perera came in second in the event to qualify for state.  Junior Luke Van Gorp finished second in the 100 Breaststroke, finishing in 56.69, to qualify for state.

Moeller junior Cooper Hodge, the GCL South Swimmer of the Year after recording two individual wins and a relay first-place finish at Keating Natatorium two weeks ago, won the 200 individual medley with a record time of 1:47.47.  Hodge also swam the anchor leg of the Crusaders’ 400 freestyle relay team that finished second behind St. Xavier to advance to state.  Peloquin, Austin Theobald and Will McCullough were on that team.

The Crusaders’ 200 freestyle relay team of McCullough, Sebastian Fabik, Justin Davidson and Dan Nymberg also qualified for state, finishing in 1:28.54 to wind up second behind St. Xavier’s 1:24.75.  All of the GCL South qualifiers will compete in the OHSAA Division I Swimming & Diving State Championships Thursday through Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
