St. Xavier Vies For Another State Championship As Prelims Begin

Preliminaries are set to begin at 9 this morning in Canton, with St. Xavier looking to continue its reign as the state’s top team by winning an eighth consecutive championship in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving State Tournament to be held at C.T. Branin Natatorium.  St. Xavier is looking for state title No. 37 overall in its storied swimming history.

As usual, the AquaBombers will have strength in numbers at the state meet as 32 individuals are scheduled to compete – led by their three relay teams, and juniors Grant House and Luke Sobolewski, who are coming off outstanding performances in last weekend’s district meet at Keating Natatorium – which was won convincingly by St. Xavier, which has now won 48 straight district crowns.

St Xavier’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams set meet records, while Sobolewski won district titles in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, finishing in 48.92, also a meet record.  House, the defending individual state champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, swam in the 500 free for the first time at district and qualified for state, with a time of 4:28.21.  He also finished second in the 200 free to qualify.

Moeller senior Cooper Hodge, the Greater Catholic League South Division swimmer of the year, also returns to state.  Hodge set a district meet record in the 200 individual medley and also swam the anchor leg of the Crusaders’ 400 freestyle relay team that qualified, along with Moeller’s 200 free relay.  Moeller finished second at last year’s state meet behind league rival St. Xavier.
