GCL South Teams Enjoy Impressive Opening Day

Moeller, La Salle, Elder In Hunt At District Wrestling Meet

It was an impressive opening day for the Greater Catholic League South Division at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Wrestling Championships, as Moeller, La Salle and Elder enter this morning’s semifinal round at Trent Arena in Kettering holding down the Nos. 2 through 4 spots in the team standings behind leader Mason after the tournament’s first two sessions.

Moeller, which has six of its wrestlers moving into today’s semifinals, earned 60.5 points through the quarterfinal round – trailing only Mason, which posted 76.5 points.  La Salle, with five of its entrants still alive, is third with 62.0 points, and Elder, which had four of its competitors move on, is fourth with 48.0 points.  Semifinal matches are set to begin a 10 this morning, with the championship finals set for 6 p.m.

Admission is $6 for the first session and $7 for the finals.

Three of the four wrestlers advancing to the semifinals at 138 pounds from the GCL South, in La Sale’s Eric Beck, Elder’s Jake Meridieth, and Jake Thompson of Moeller.  Beck and Meridieth will wrestle in the semifinals, while Thompson will oppose Tristin McGrath of Glen Este.  The only other weight class with multiple semifinalists from the GCL South is 160 pounds, with Robby Oswald of Elder and La Salle’s Blake Wilson on track to meet in the finals.

Here are the GCL South semifinalists:

Moeller (6):  113 pounds – Jordan Ward; 138 – Jake Thompson; 152 – Jacoby Ward; 182 – Sam Wyche; 195 – Trevor Hankins; 220 – Jack Meyer.

La Salle (5):  106 pounds – Lucas Byrd; 132 – Corey Shie; 138 – Eric Beck; 160 – Blake Wilson; 170 – Michael Baker.

Elder (4):  126 pounds – Austin Murphy; 138 – Jake Meridieth; 160 – Robby Oswald; 170 – Ti’Ric Evans.
