GCL South Members La Salle, Elder Also Finish Among Top Five Teams

The final team standings of Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Division Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Trent Arena in Kettering, look similar to the Greater Catholic League Wrestling Tournament held a few weeks back, as Moeller, La Sale and Elder captured three of the top five places and qualified an average of six wrestlers per school for the upcoming state meet.

Moeller wound up in first place, finishing with 154.5 points to finish ahead of runner-up Mason, which totaled 147.0 after holding the lead after the first day of competition.  La Salle came in third place, with 128.0 points, followed by Fairfield with 120.0 and Elder at 105.0.  St., Xavier, the fourth GCL South member, finished at No. 25 with a team score of 19.0.

In all, a total of 18 wrestlers from the GCL South qualified for the OHSAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament to be held Thursday through Saturday at the Schottenstein Center on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus.  The Division I preliminaries begin at 5:50 p.m.  Thursday.  Moeller will send eight wrestlers to the state meet, while La Salle and Elder also will be well presented, with six and four going, respectively.

Moeller wrestlers claimed two district championships, with Jake Thompson winning at 138 pounds and senior Jack Meyer victorious at 220, a win that ultimately gave Moeller the team title.  La Salle junior Corey Shie won a district title at 132 pounds for the second straight year after winning at 120 his freshman season, and sophomore Ti’Ric Evans of Elder earned the district crown at 170.

Shie beat Mason junior Zach Donathan, 5-4, in the final match.  Donathan is a two-tie district champion who also placed at state at 106 pounds two years ago.  Shie will take a 39-3 record into the state meet.  Moeller’s Jacoby Ward earned his way back to state for the fourth consecutive year, at 152, after placing each of the last three meets – finishing eighth at 120 pounds in 2013, fourth at 132 in 2014, and then sixth at 138 a year ago.

Two district titles came down to matches between GCL South wrestlers, with Thompson getting past Eric Beck of La Salle in the 138-pound final, winning by decision, 5-1, and then Evans defeating La Salle freshman Michael Baker in the 170-pound title match, winning by a 9-2 decision.

Besides Beck and Baker, three other GCL South wrestlers advanced to the final match – Moeller’s Jordan Ward at 113 , and Elder wrestlers Austin Murphy at 126 and Robby Oswald at 160.   Five GCL South wrestlers won third-place matches:  La Salle’s Lucas Byrd (106) and Blake Wilson (160), and Moeller’s Brett Bryant (170), Trevor Hankins (195) and Joe Hensley (285).
