Ernst Two TD Passes Lead Crusaders To Road Win Sunday Afternoon

Senior quarterback Evan Ernst tossed a pair of touchdown passes to help Moeller jump out to a 17-0 lead and then hold on for a 17-14 victory over Mason in a non-conference football game Sunday afternoon at Mason High School’s Atrium Stadium.  The game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but was canceled and moved to Sunday after a bomb threat was called in just before 6 Friday evening to the Warren County Dispatch Center.

Ernst connected on 13-of-23 passes for 155 yards and two first-half TDs, while also rushing 11 times for 55 yards for the Crusaders (2-1) – which amassed 321 total yards and 18 first downs against previously unbeaten Mason (2-1) – which was victimized by three turnovers. Moeller is now 2-0 all-time against Mason, winning the only other meeting between the two schools, 24-7, in the 2007 Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at Miami University’s Yager Stadium.

A 25-yard field goal in the third quarter gave Moeller a 17-0 lead, but Mason rallied to score once later in that period and then added another TD on a second Preston Hutchinson pass with 3:37 remaining in the game.   Mason would regain possession with a final chance, but Crusaders linebacker The-Moor Kelly intercepted a pass with less than two minutes remaining to preserve the win.

The Moeller victory wrapped up a 3-1 weekend for the GCL South, with Elder (2-1) and St. Xavier (1-2) going on the road to record victories at Scott County, Ky. and Mentor.  La Salle suffered its first loss, falling 6-0 in a defensive struggle at undefeated and neighborhood rival Colerain on Friday night.  The loss snapped a two-game winning streak in that series for the Lancers (2-1).
