Elder-La Salle Game To Determine Coveted League Title

It seems only fitting that it wouldn’t be until the final Friday night of the regular season for the Greater Catholic League South Division to determine its football championship.  That is exactly the case this evening, as the final league game of the season – Elder versus La Salle – will  signify if there is an outright GCL South winner or whether three teams will share the coveted crown in a league that was called the second toughest in the country by MaxPreps earlier this season.

If La Salle wins at Elder tonight, the Lancers will be the outright GCL South champion for the first time in its school history.  La Salle previously shared GCL South titles in 1995, 2010 and 2014.  However, should Elder emerge victorious at The Pit in Price Hill, the Panthers would earn a share of the league title with La Salle and St. Xavier as the three teams would finish with 2-1 records in the GCL South.  St. Xavier and Moeller, which finished 0-3 in the league, finished their GCL South schedules three weeks ago.  Both have non-conference games to close out the regular season.

St. Xavier (4-5), which has dropped three straight games, looks to solidify its postseason chances when it hosts Louisville St. Xavier (7-2) at 7 tonight.  Moeller (3-6) closes the regular season by hosting Royal Imperial Collegiate of Canada at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first game to be played on Moeller High School’s campus on Montgomery Road.  St. Xavier is No. 8 in this week’s Division I, Region 4 Harbin computer rankings – with the top eight qualifying for the state playoffs.  Moeller has been eliminated from postseason competition.

Elder and La Salle are both in good positions for the playoffs heading into tonight’s game.  The Panthers (6-3, 1-1 GCL South), who have been riddled with recent injuries, are No. 4 in the Region 4 rankings.  The top four teams in each region also host first-round games before the playoffs move to neutral sites.  La Salle (7-2, 2-0), the two-time defending Division II state champion,  is No. 3 in the Division II, Region 8 rankings this week.  Kickoff is 7 at Elder.

The Lancers have won five straight games.
