Crusaders Play, Win First-Ever Home Game Held On Montgomery Campus

Senior running back Hunter Hughes rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns, and senior quarterbacks Evan Ernst and Pete Lambert each surpassed 100 yards passing with a pair of TD tosses to lead Moeller to a 56-22 victory over Royal Imperial Collegiate of Canada Saturday afternoon on the final day of the regular season and in the first game Moeller ever played at the Gerry Faust Athletic Complex on its Montgomery Road campus.

The Crusaders use Lockland Stadium as their primary home field.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Moeller (4-6), which endured the first losing season in school history and will miss the state playoffs for the second consecutive year.  A few close losses, including a 30-28 setback to Greater Catholic League South member Elder and a 24-21 loss to two-time defending state champion Lakewood St. Edward with four seconds left, prevented the Crusaders from earning a postseason berth.

Moeller, which won consecutive Division I state championships in 2012 and 2013 and advanced to the state semifinals in 2014, played the second toughest schedule in the United States according to MaxPreps.  The only school that faced a tougher 10-game slate of opponents according to the high school site was St. Xavier, another GCL South member.

Saturday, though, the play of Moeller’s seniors was the difference.  Hughes averaged 10.3 yards per carry and scored on a 28-yard run.  Ernst completed 4-of-9 passes for 139 yards and two TDs, including an 80-yarder to senior Matt Dotson – who caught three passes for 117 yards and two scores.  Lambert was 5-of-9 passing for 115 yards and two TDs.  Senior Chrystian Watkins also tied teammate RJ Khayo’s school record for the longest kickoff return for a TD, returning one 99 yards in the first half to give Moeller a 21-7 lead at halftime.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will release the final Harbin computer ratings, the system used to qualify teams for the state playoffs, this afternoon.  GCL South members Elder, La Salle and St. Xavier are all expected to earn postseason berths, with the first-round opponents and sites to be determined today.  The Divisions I and II state playoffs begin this Friday.
