OHSAA Announces Sites For Regions 4 & 8 Championship Games

La Salle is looking to take one more step toward a Division II three-peat, while St. Xavier is vying to move one step closer to the school’s third state football championship when the Greater Catholic League Division members tee it up in the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Football Tournament Friday night.  La Salle meets Miamisburg in the Division II, Region 8 final at Hamilton’s Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium, while St. Xavier plays Sycamore in the Division I, Region 4 final at Mason’s Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium.

Both games kick off at 7:30.

La Salle (10-2), winners of eight straight this season and 12 in a row in the state playoffs, is coming off a dominating performance last Friday in a 34-3 win over previously unbeaten Turpin.  The Lancers held Turpin to just over 100 total yards and eight first downs, while senior running back Jarell White carried 16 times for 141 yards and two scores. Miamisburg (10-2) should provide a tough test, as the Vikings knocked off Troy, the region’s No. 1 seed, 28-21, last Friday to advance to the region final.

St. Xavier (7-5) looks to carry over the momentum from its thrilling, come-from-behind 29-23 overtime win over Colerain, the state’s No. 1-ranked team, in last Friday’s semifinal.  St. Xavier trialed 23-7 late in the third quarter before a blocked punt returned four yards for a TD by senior Carl Grimm, and a series of key late drives engineered by senior quarterback Sean Clifford forced the extra session.  A defensive stop and missed field goal by Colerain, followed by a 20-yard scoring pass from Clifford to Nicholas Moeller on the next play proved to be the difference.

The Bombers – who have now won three straight games following a three-game losing streak near the end of the regular season – face a Sycamore team that is playing its best football.  The Aviators defeated Mason, 20-7, last Friday to make it six straight victories and earn Sycamore (8-4) the school’s first berth in the regional final.  Sycamore (8-4) hasn’t lost since late September.  Senior Ra’Von Bonner is the Aviators’ big-play threat, having carried 293 times for 2,122 yards and 35 rushing TDs this season.

Tickets for both games are available at the participating schools.  La Salle is selling regional final tickets from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday in the school’s main office.   St. Xavier will sell tickets from 11:10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and then from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Friday.  Tickets will be available in the Athletic/AP office. Advance tickets to the regional finals are $8, with the school receiving a portion of the sales.  Tickets are $9 at the gate.
