Crusaders Use Big Second and Third Quarters Against Sycamore

Moeller completed a 3-0 week to remain unbeaten this season by outscoring neighborhood rival Sycamore, 43-14, in the second and third quarters to post a 68-32 victory in a non-conference basketball game Saturday night at Moeller. The Crusaders, ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches poll, started the week with a win over previously unbeaten Covington Catholic and then defeated Columbus Whitehall-Yearling Friday night.

The other three Greater Catholic League South Division teams were off Saturday.

Sophomore guard Miles McBride led a balanced Crusaders’ offense with 12 points, while senior guard Keegan McDowell scored in double figures for the fifth straight game, with 10.  McBride also led his team with five assists and three steals, while senior guard Caleb Canter added eight points and a team-high six rebounds.  Moeller (5-0) continued its host early-season shooting, connecting on 24-of-48 field goals, while also outrebounding Sycamore, 34-18.

Up next for coach Carl Kremer’s team is a road test at Greater Miami Conference-member Oak Hills on Friday.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.  The Highlanders are a perfect 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the GMC, including a 49-43 victory at Mason last Friday, in the process ending Mason’s 18-game GMC winning streak.  Oak Hills is led by 6-foot-5 senior Ryan Batte, who ranks among GMC leaders in points (16.0) and rebounds (8.3).  The two teams met in the postseason last February, with Moeller winning a 51-58 overtime thrilled.

La Salle (2-0) starts the week for the GCL South with a home game against GMC member Lakota West at 7:30 Tuesday night, while Elder travels to Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. that same day.  St. Xavier (2-1) has two games against GCL Co-Ed schools, hosting Hamilton Badin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to face Roger Bacon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.  The GCL South teams have a combined 12-2 record against non-conference opponents entering this week.
