Moeller, La Salle Remain Undefeated With Florida Tourney Wins

Wednesday was a good day to be a basketball team from the Greater Catholic League South Division playing in a Florida holiday invitational, as La Salle, Moeller and St. Xavier all posted victories in their respective tournaments – with No. 1 Moeller and No. 3 La Salle keeping their records perfect this season.  St. Xavier also notched a win in its latest game, while Elder was defeated in the opening round of the Newark Holiday Classic in Newark, Ohio.

Here is a look at Wednesday’s games involving GCL South teams:

Moeller 40, Archbishop Stepinak, NY 35 – Sophomore guard Miles McBride scored a team-high 14 points, and the Crusaders overcame an off-shooting night with a big fourth quarter to win its opening game in the Battle at The Villages at The Villages, Fla.  Moeller (7-0), No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly area coaches’ poll, trailed 32-27 entering the final quarter before outscoring Stepinak, 13-3.  Moeller hit 9-of-11 free throws down the stretch.

Caleb Canter and Riley Voss grabbed eight and six rebounds, respectively, as Moeller outrebounded the Crusaders, 25-15.  Moeller trailed 35-32 with 40 seconds remaining before outscoring Stepinak 8-0 to emerge victorious.  The Crusaders connected on only 13-of-30 field goals and hits just 5-of-14 three-pointers.  Moeller advances to play New Mission from Boston at 6:30 tonight.

La Salle 53, Westminster Academy, FL 46 – Like Moeller, La Salle also remained undefeated with a win over nationally ranked Westminster Academy from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational at Ocala, Fla.  The victory earned the Lancers (5-0) a matchup with host Vanguard on its home court in the semifinals at 7:30 tonight.  Vanguard advanced with a victory over Georgetown Prep from North Bethesda, Md. and is now 8-1 this season.  Senior guard C.J. Fleming connected on four key free throws in the final seconds to preserve the win.

St. Xavier 56, Cardinal Newman, SC 51 – St. Xavier was hindered by a slow start and late turnovers while trying to close out the game, but the Bombers still managed to defeat Cardinal Newman from Columbia, S.C. for the second time in as many years – this time at the Rock Holiday Classic at Windmere Prep in Orlando, Fla.  St. Xavier – which lost Tuesday’s opening game – also defeated Cardinal Newman, 50-42, last December in the St. Pius X Christmas Classic just outside Atlanta.

Senior Daniel Keyes led St. Xavier (3-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak, with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists.  Matthew Budde had nine points and six rebounds, including a key late free throw.  Bobby Jefferson scored all seven of his points in he first half and led the Bombers with eight rebounds.  St. Xavier will oppose North Laurel from London, Ky. at in the fifth-place game at 1:30 p.m. today.   North Laurel is led by Eastern Kentucky University commit Peyton Broughton, who has scored 67 and 42 points in games this season.  

Olentangy 53, Elder 40 – The Panthers dropped their second straight game, falling in the opening game of the Newark Holiday Classic at Newark High School’s Jimmy Allen Gymnasium.  The Panthers (3-3) will meet Logan in the consolation game at 6 tonight.  Host Newark defeated Logan, 78-55, in Wednesday’s other first-round game.  Jerred Kinnaird scored a game-high 18 to lead Olentangy, which knocked down all 14 of its free throws in the fourth quarter. Elder struggled early, scoring just nine points in the first half.
