Elder Hosts St. Xavier On First Full Night Of South Division Play

An early-season showdown for first place in the Greater Catholic League South Division basketball race is scheduled tonight when La Salle travels to Montgomery Road to face undefeated Moeller in a 7:30 game that matches the top two ranked teams in Greater Cincinnati Division I, according to The Enquirer’s weekly area coaches’ poll.  Elder hosts St. Xavier in tonight’s other GCL South game.

La Salle (9-1, 1-0 GCL South), coming off a 45-30 win at Purcell Marian on Tuesday and winner of its league opener against Elder a week ago, will be without leading scorer C.J. Fleming against Moeller.  Fleming, who leads the GCL South in scoring (18.0) and field-goal percentage (69.2), has missed the last three games after suffering a shoulder injury in the championship game of the Kingdom of the Sun in Florida over the holiday break.

The Lancers are looking to seniors Tre Crigler and Da’Meak Brandon, along with junior Riley Haubner, to pick up some of the scoring slack without Fleming.  Brandon and Crigler scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, against Purcell Marian.  La Salle, ranked No. 2 behind Moeller by The Enquirer, always brings its rugged defense.  Coach Dan Fleming’s team is allowing a league-low 38.6 points per game and has allowed only four opponents to score more than 40.

Moeller (11-0), which is also ranked No. 1 in Ohio Division I, has yet to lose this season – thanks to a deep roster and some pretty good defense of its own, allowing opponents to score just 39.9 points a game.  The Crusaders are coming off one of their toughest test of the season against Centerville last Saturday, a game in which Moeller trailed by eight in the third quarter before coming alive to remain unbeaten with a 41-35 victory.

Coach Carl Kremer’s team is comfortable playing at home, too, having won 13 straight games at Moeller.  The last loss came on February 14, 2015 when Centerville squeaked out a 42-41 road win.  Senior guard Keegan McDowell leads a balanced Moeller offense, averaging 14.6 points.  The Crusaders have five players averaging 6.9 points or higher,  in Miles McBride (9.5), Isaiah Payton (7.5), Riley Voss (7.2) and Caleb Canter (6.9).

Elder and St. Xavier meet in tonight’s other GCL South game, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at The Pit in Price Hill. This is the GCL South opener for St. Xavier (5-6), which has won two straight games – the latest victory against Harrison, 64-36, at home Tuesday.  Junior Chase Wolf came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points, while senior Daniel Keyes added 10 against Harrison.

Elder (4-4, 0-1) is happy to have senior Dashawn Mosley back in the lineup after being sidelined with an injury.  Mosley posted team highs of 15 points and  eight rebounds at La Salle last Friday and is averaging 17.2 points, which ranks second in the league behind Fleming.  This is only the third home game for Elder this season, having split the previous two.  The Panthers have dropped three of their last four games.
