League Teams Post 3-1 Mark To Close Out Busy Hoops Week

The Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams posted a 3-1 record against non-conference opponents Saturday night, highlighted by Moeller rallying from a double-digit deficit to remain undefeated and lengthen its home court winning streak that dates back to February 2015.  La Salle and St. Xavier also posted wins at home, while Elder fell behind early and saw its rally fall just short against a team from Toronto, Ontario.

Here is a look at Saturday’s games involving GCL South schools:

Moeller 54, Springfield 51 – A few weeks back, Moeller trailed Greater Western Ohio Conference school Centerville by eight points in the third quarter before rallying for a 51-35 win.  On Saturday, the top-ranked and unbeaten Crusaders were behind talented Springfield, another GWOC member, by as many as 11 points in the third quarter before putting together a 19-8 run and eventually holding on to extend their home winning streak to 16 games.

Senior guard Keegan McDowell scored 15 points and sophomore guard Miles McBride added 13 for Moeller (15-0), which sits atop the Associated Press state and The Enquirer’s area Division I polls.  The Crusaders, who allow just 40.9 points per game (second in the league to La Salle’s 39.9), held Springfield to just three points in the fourth quarter.  Springfield (11-2), which missed three shots and two free throws on its final four possessions, entered the game on a 10-game winning streak.

Senior forward Riley Voss capped Moeller’s run in the fourth quarter, converting a steal into a dunk with 4:16 left to give the Crusaders a 51-50 lead.  Springfield had its chances in the final minutes, before two free throws by McBride with 32 seconds remaining sealed the victory.

Moeller and Springfield have played some close games the last two-plus seasons.  In 2014-15, Springfield defeated the Crusaders twice – winning 74-72 in overtime at Springfield during the regular season and then emerging with a 51-47 victory in the Division I regional semifinal.  Last season, the two schools did not play during the regular but met again in the regional semifinal, with Moeller posting a 64-58 victory behind 18 points from McDowell.  Moeller lost to Wilmington, 40-37, in the regional final.

La Salle 68, W.C. Kennedy (Canada) 38 – Senior guards C.J. Fleming and Tre Crigler combined to score 33 points and nail five three-point goals as La Salle (12-2) jumped out to a 36-20halftime lead and coasted to its third straight win and sixth victory in seven games this year.  La Salle, No. 2 behind Moeller in The Enquirer’s Division I rankings, recorded 13 steals in the game – five by Fleming and four by senior Da’Meak Brandon.  La Salle also took good care of the basketball, committing just five turnovers.

St. Xavier 52, Anderson 42 – Senior guard Daniel Keyes scored a team-high 15 points, and senior guard Gage Hammann added 10 to lead St. Xavier to its fourth straight win over an opponent out of the GCL South.   The Bombers, who played solid defense by limiting Anderson to a total of 14 made field goals and just 4-of-21 shooting from three-point range, were led in rebounding by Danial Wassler (six) and in assists by Matthew Budde (three).  St. Xavier is off until hosting La Salle in a GCL South game Friday.

St. Michael’s (Ontario) 50, Elder 44 – St. Michael’s knocked down eight three-pointers and built an 11-point halftime lead and eventually hold off Elder Saturday afternoon at The Pit.  Junior guards Brett Marsh and Zach Harp led the Panthers with 18 and 14 points, respectively, while sophomore Trevor Estep added 10 for Elder – which sank six three-point shots, four by Harp and two by Marsh.  Elder (6-6) is at Western Hills Tuesday night before returning to The Pit and GCL South action by hosting Moeller Friday.
