Czepukaitis Named Top Swimmer After Picking Up Four Wins

Junior Nick Czepukaitis won two individual events and sawm a leg on two winning relay teams for St. Xavier as the AquaBombers won all 12 events, claiming the top four finishes in six of nine individual events, to capture the Greater Catholic League Division I Swimming & Diving Championships held last week at Keating Natatorium on St. Xavier High School’s campus.  Last season, the AquaBombers won the GCL, sectional, district and Division I state championships.

If the league meet is any indication, St. Xavier is primed for another swim toward a state title – which the AquaBombers have won 37 times in their illustrious swimming history.  As usual, tremendous talent and unmatched depth are the team strengths – evidenced by the fact that every St. Xavier swim in the GCL meet finished in the top eight with an 89 percent Best Times calculation.  Taking it one step further, 10 swims (each by a different AquaBomber) would have been a state qualifier last season and seven would have scored.

Czepukaitis captured the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events, while also earning first in the 20- and 400-freestyle relays.  The result for St. Xavier – which has won eight straight state titles – was team score of 501, followed by Moeller at 301, Elder at 142.5 and La Salle at 111.5.  The postseason begins this week, with Division I boys’ swimming competition to be held in the Cincinnati sectional (Keating Natatorium) and the Mason sectional (Mason High School).  Competitions begins at 6 and 6:30 p.m., respectively, at the two sites Friday night.

St. Xavier coach Tim Beerman was named the GCL South Coach of the Year.
