Panthers Defeat Moeller, La Salle In Dual Format To Win

Elder defeated La Salle, 35-24, in the final match of the Greater Catholic League South Division Wrestling Championships Saturday at Elder High School – giving the Panthers their second straight league title, having finished atop a 10-school field that included the six GCL Co-Ed wrestling teams last year.  Elder defeated Moeller, 58-15, earlier in the day to advance to the finals of the dual format between the four GCL South member schools.  La Salle knocked off St. Xavier in its first match to advance.

The Panthers were victorious over La Salle in the final – thanks largely in part to pins by Nino Salamone at 132 pounds, and then Antonio McCloud at 220 and Alec-Moore Nash at 285 in the final two weight classes.  Some of the league’s best wrestlers also squared off and wound up being decided by narrow margins, with Ethan Heard of La Salle getting past Chucky Lipps, 10-9, at 126; Corey Shie besting Jake Meridieth, 3-1, at 138; Austin Murphy of Elder beating Erick Beck, 3-2, at 145; and La Sale’s Michael Baker earning a 4-3 victory over Ti’Ric Evans at 170.

Elder also captured the GCL South Junior Varsity Championship.
