St. Xavier Tries To Keep GCL South Unbeaten In Sectional

Junior guard Zach Harp scored a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, and senior forward Dashawn Mosley added 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to lead Elder to a 53-42 victory over Hamilton Friday night in the opening round of the Cincinnati 1 Sectional Tournament at Lakota West High School.  Greater Catholic League member St. Xavier will attempt to be the third league school in as many days to win its postseason opener when the Bombers play Lakota West at 6 tonight in the Cincinnati 2 sectional at Hamilton.

La Salle opened league tournament play with a 60-45 win over Winton Woods Thursday in the Cincinnati 3 sectional at Hamilton.  After tonight, Moeller will be the lone GCL South team not to play a sectional game. The top seed and unbeaten Crusaders open their state tournament quest against the Harrison-Little Miami winner (from tonight’s game) in the Cincinnati 4 sectional semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton.  Moeller just completed the first undefeated season in the school’s basketball history.

Elder (11-11) snapped a three-game skid behind Harp, who was 4-of-6 from three-point range, and helped the Panthers widen a three-point halftime edge against Hamilton (11-12) by outscoring the Big Blue, 13-8, in the third quarter to go ahead, 33-24.  Mosley sank 7-of-8 free throws as Elder made 15-of-20 from the line, while senior guard Braden Connor added six points, three assists and four of his team’s nine steals in the win.  The Panthers advance to play Northwest (16-6) in the sectional semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lakota West.

Northwest won the Southwest Ohio Conference this season, posting an 11-1 conference record.
