Elder, La Salle Claim Top Two Spots In Wrestling Sectional

GCL South Schools Send 34 Grapplers To District Match Saturday

Five wrestlers won their respective weight classes and 12 qualified for the district tournament this weekend to help Elder capture the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I sectional wrestling championship held last Saturday at Hamilton High School.  Elder, which also won the Greater Catholic League South Division championship one week earlier in a dual format, finished with a score of 270 – just ahead of GCL South member La Salle’s score of 238.5.

La Salle, which also faced Elder in the GCL South title match (a 35-24 Panthers’ victory), also had five wrestlers win titles at the sectional and have 11 advancing to the district match – which will be held Friday and Saturday at Trent Arena in Kettering.  The top four placers in each weight class advance to the district tournament.

Elder won sectional titles at the following weight classes:  132 pounds (Nino Salamone), 152 (Connor Craig), 160 (Ti’Ric Evans), 220 (Antonio McCloud) and 285 (Alec Moore-Nash).   Other Panthers advancing to the district are William Doepker (third at 106), Jack Collins (second at 120), Chucky Lipps (third at 126), Jake Meridieth (second at 138), Austin Murphy (second at 145), Charles Sanders (third at 170), and Xavier Weathersby (third at 182).

La Salle’s five sectional winners were Lucas Byrd (106 pounds), Antoine Allen (113), E’lan Heard (126), Corey Shie (138) and Eric Beck (145).  Six other Lancers qualified for the district match – Hunter Perdue (second at 152), Michael Baker (second at 170), Blake Wilson (second at 182) and Garrett Bledsoe (second at 195), while  Trey Sizemore (third at 160) and Robert Brown (fourth at 220) also advanced.

Moeller had two sectional champs in Jake Thompson (182) and Brett Bryant (185).  The Crusaders have six other district qualifiers – Jordan Ward (second at 126), Mitchell Moore (third at 132), William Pappalardo (third at 138), Vincent Scally (fourth at 145), Trevor Hankins (third at 220), and Andrew Yeager (fourth at 285).

St. Xavier, which came in eighth place with 58 points, also will be represented at the district meet, with three Bombers advancing out of sectionals.  District qualifiers are Connor Yauss (third at 152), Adam McCurren (fourth at 170) and Paul Hulefeld (third at 185).
