GCL South Teams Could Meet With Trip To State Final Four On Line

Moeller and La Salle, which finished first and second, respectively, in the Greater Catholic League South Division this season and entered the postseason holding down the top two seeds in Greater Cincinnati’s sectional tournament, play back-to-back tonight in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.  Unbeaten and No. 1 seed Moeler plays Mason in the first regional semifinal at 6:15 p.m., followed by No. 2 seed La Salle against Springfield at approximately 8.

If both GCL South teams are victorious, it would set up a third meeting this season between the two teams in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. regional final – with a berth in the OHSAA DI Final Four on the line.  Moeller won both games during the regular season, 49-39 at home on January 13 and 47-41 at La Salle on February 3.  La Salle, though, is the last GCL South team to win a state title – knocking off Moeller, 36-35, in the regional final six years ago as part of a 14-game winning streak that gave the Lancers’ the DI crown in 2010-11.

First things first, though, it won’t be easy for either GCL South team to get past its semifinal opponent.  Moeller (25-0) will attempt to get by Mason (21-2), which finished behind Oak Hills in the Greater Miami Conference and is riding an eight-game winning streak.  The Comets are undefeated outside of the GCM, with their two losses against Oak Hills and a talented Princeton team.   Mason earned its first district championship in school history with a 44-38 win against Centerville on Saturday.

La Salle (23-3), which has allowed 28 and 33 points in its last two games and owns the stingiest defense in the GCL South (giving up an average of 40.5 points), faces a talent laden Springfield (23-3), which won the National East division of the Greater Western Ohio Conference with an 11-1 record and has won five straight.  Springfield advanced to the regional semifinals with a 46-42 overtime win against Oak Hills in Saturday’s district final.

Springfield’s losses this season are to Beavercreek, 70-69, in overtime on December 6; Moeller, 54-51, in a game that the Wildcats led by double digits in the third quarter on the road on January 21; and most recently, to Trotwood-Madison, 88-73, last month.  Trotwood-Madison, which is 24-2, meets Taft in the Division II regional semis Thursday at Trent Arena.

Tickets are available for tonight’s GCL South doubleheader until noon today at La Salle and until 3 p.m. today at Moeller. Advance tickets are $7, with a portion of the ticket monies benefiting the school where they are sold.  Tickets are $8 at the Nutter Center Box Office and are good for both games.
