Highly-Ranked Crusaders, Bombers Meet At Gettler Stadium This Evening

Top-ranked Moeller, off to an impressive 4-0-1 start against some of Greater Cincinnati’s toughest non-league opponents, opens Greater Catholic League South Division play against No. 3 St. Xavier, which is 2-1-2 and coming off its first championship in the prestigious Jesuit Cup last weekend.  The match – the league opener for both schools - begins at 7 tonight at the University’s Gettler Stadium on its Clifton campus.  La Salle, the defending GCL South champion, begins its title defense by facing Elder at 7 tonight at Kolping Park.

St. Xavier, which finished one-half game behind La Salle in the 2016 league standings, swept the season series from Moeller last fall – winning by scores of 4-1 and 2-0.  But this is not the same Crusaders – which wound up 7-8-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the GCL South a year ago.  This is a talented Moeller team that has already posted victories over Mason, No. 2 Anderson, Lakota East and Sycamore.  Moeller tied Lakota West, 1-1, in its fifth match.

The Bombers, who tied Sycamore, 1-1, in their last match on Thursday, captured the Jesuit Cup on Sunday, August 26 with a win  in sudden death of penalty kicks against Toledo St. John’s.  Junior forward Gino Geiser scored what turned out to be the game-winner for St. Xavier, which one day earlier had knocked off the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in Cleveland St. Ignatius, 4-2, ending the Wildcats’ 61-match winning streak.

La Salle, led by first-year coach Ryan Albrinck, is off to a 2-1-1 start.  The Lancers, who finished 14-3-2 overall last season and 5-1-0 in the GCL South, have not lost in their last three matches since falling to Dublin Coffman, 5-1, in the season opener.  Elder, 0-3-1 in its first four matches, is looking for its first victory.  The Panthers fell to Fairfield, 2-0, in its last match after trying Covington Catholic, 1-1, in the previous match.
