Lengthy La Salle String Is Over; Elder Faces Tough Challenge Today

St. Xavier used a stingy defense and got two touchdowns each from Matthew Fox and Chase Wolf on its way to a 30-7 victory over Moeller in the Greater Catholic League South Division opener for both schools Friday night before a sold-out crowd at Roettger Stadium in Lockland.  St. Xavier (5-0, 1-0 GCL South), ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly area coaches’ poll and No. 2 in the Associated Press Division I state rankings) has now won 11 straight games and is off to its first 5-0 start since the 2007 season – when the Bombers finished a perfect 15-0.  No. 2 Moeller (3-2, 0-1) was held to less than 200 yards offense for the first time this season.

Here is the complete game story from Mike Dyer of WCPO.com.

While St. Xavier extended its streak, La Salle suffered its first loss in 16 games with an 18-15 loss to unbeaten Winton Woods (5-0) Friday night at Lancer Stadium.  La Salle (4-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in both the state and local Division II polls, having not lost a game since last September – a 31-18 setback at Christian Brothers, Tenn.  La Salle took a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter before Winton Woods’ Kenny Mayberry and Miyan Williams each scored rushing TDs to give the Warriors an 18-7 lead.  La Salle had only allowed two touchdowns in its first four games before Friday night.  The Lancers face Moeller in their GCL opener next Friday in Lockland.

Elder (3-1) is the last GCL South team to play this week, and the Panthers have a huge test.  Elder hosts Cleveland St. Ignatius (4-0), Ohio’s top-ranked Division I team, at 2 p.m. today at The Pit in Price Hill.  The last time these two schools met was in the 2008 state championship game, when St. Ignatius prevailed, 28-20.  No. 4 Elder is looking to rebound from a 40-7 loss to Lakewood St. Edward last Saturday in Greater Cleveland.  Elder will rely on a balanced offense, with Luke Masminster third in the league in rushing yards, with 282, and Kyle Trischler second in receiving yards, with 325.

Elder opens its GCL South schedule at St. Xavier at 7 p.m. next Friday.
