Moeller, St. Xavier Advance In Sectional Tourney Play

Top seed Moeller and Greater Catholic League South Division colleague St. Xavier both advanced with victories Saturday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Boys’ Soccer Tournament.  Moeller, the GCL South champion and No. 1 ranked team in Greater Cincinnati, defeated Winton Woods, 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Moeller High School, while St. Xavier advanced by knocking off GCL South member La Salle by one goal for the second time in two weeks, this time by a score of 2-1 Saturday at St. Xavier High School.

Moeller (13-1-3), the overall No. 1 seed in the Southwest District, advances to meet Lakota East (7-8-2) at 7 p.m. today at Sycamore High School.  Lakota East, a member of the Greater Miami Conference, advanced with a 4-0 win Saturday over Oak Hills.  Moeller, which has not lost in its last seven matches, defeated Lakota East, 2-0, at Moeller back on August 31.

St. Xavier (9-4-4), the No. 5 seed, will now play No. 3 Mason (11-5-2) at 7 tonight at Princeton High School’s Viking Stadium.  Mason knocked off Princeton, 5-1, on Saturday to keep its postseason journey alive.  The two teams played during the regular season on September 23, with St. Xavier posting a 2-1 victory at St. Xavier.

Elder (3-10-5) was knocked out of postseason play by No. 4 seed Fairfield, 1-0, Saturday night at Fairfield Stadium.

Moeller is now third in the school’s soccer history in wins, with 13, and also has the third best winning percentage in Crusaders’ history.   Sophomore goalkeeper Cal Collins notched his eighth shutout of the year, which ranks him No. 10 on the all-time career shutouts list.  Senior Tyler Grinstead scored twice, one of seven Moeller players to notch a goal.  Sophomore Parker Grinstead recorded assist No. 11, which ranks him third for the most assists in a season at Moeller.

St. Xavier proved resilient again in its match against La Salle.  The Bombers took a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match on a goal by junior forward Matthew Sutton and maintained the advantage 19 minutes into the second half, when La Salle knotted the score, 1-1, on a corner kick that ultimately resulted in a header for a goal by senior Jon Miller.  Just five minutes later, St. Xavier tallied what would turn out to be the winning goal , when junior Craig Wellens scored from 11 yards out to put the Bombers ahead, 2-1.
