Moeller, Elder, St. Xavier Go 3-0 In Non-Conference Games

It was a perfect Saturday night for the Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams, as Moeller went on the road to remain perfect in the calendar year and extend its winning streak to eight games with a 55-39 victory against Springfield.  Elder also hit the road, though a much shorter commute, to knock off Cincinnati Country Day School, 73-41, while St. Xavier stayed at home to post a 77-60 win over GCL Co-Ed member Bishop Fenwick, the Bombers’ fifth win in the last six games

Here is look at Saturday’s GCL South games:

Moeller Keeps Rolling – The Crusaders continued their accurate shooting, connecting on 21-of-35 field goals for 60 percent, while also limiting Springfield to just 11 field goals and holding the Wildcats to single digits in two quarters.  Seniors forward Jeremiah Davenport led Moeller (15-3) with 16 points, while senior junior guard Alec Pfriem had 11 points and team-high eight rebounds, and senior forward Carlos Garcia added 10 points.  Senior forward Jaxson Hayes, in foul trouble all game,  had four points in just nine minutes before fouling out.  Pfriem also led Moeller with five assists.  The Crusaders broke open a close game by outscoring Springfield (15-3), 20-9, in the fourth quarter.

Elder Streak At Three – Senior guard Zach Harp scored a team-high 16 points, while senior forward Andrew Broxterman added 14 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and senior Brett Marsh chipped in with nine as 10 Panthers scored in the road victory – the third straight and fifth in the last six games for Elder (11-9).  Elder led just 14-13 after one quarter, but outscored the Indians by 31 points in the final three quarters.  One night earlier, Elder put up 42 points in the second half to break open a close game and record a win at home against St. Xavier.  Elder was 10-of-21 on three-pointers against CCD (10-6), including three each from Harp and Broxterman.

St. X Gets Back On Track – A night after having their four-game winning streak snapped, the Bombers started a new one against Fenwick (12-5) – thanks to a 30-point first quarter and balanced scoring, with four players scoring in double figures.  Junior guard Nathan Stockman led St. Xavier (13-5), now 8-2 in 2018, with 19 points, followed by senior forward Chase Wolf with 18, senior forward Bobby Jefferson with 12, and senior guard Nathan Glecker adding 10 coming off the bench.  Senior forward Andrew Wittrock led St. Xavier – which nailed 13-of-20 three-point shots – with nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals.  Fenwick is the GCL Co-Ed North Division leader.

La Salle, the fourth GCL South member, had the night off, but the Lancers are back on the hardwood Tuesday with a game at GCL Co-Ed member Dayton Chaminade-Julieene.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.  Moeller also plays Tuesday, hosting Winton Woods at 7:30.  Elder and St. Xavier resume play Friday, with another big night of GCL South games.  Elder travels to La Salle, while Moeller attempts to win the league championship outright with a victory at St. Xavier.  The Crusaders, who have clinched at least a share of the GCL Crown, have won or shared the last six league titles, including this year.
