League Baseball Teams Set To Open Tournament Play This Week

Every team hopes to be playing its best entering the postseason and, for Moeller baseball coach Tim Held, there is little question that the Crusaders have saved their best for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Tournament that begins this week.  Moeller, which wrapped up the outright Greater Catholic League South Division championship last week, extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 8-7 victory Monday against Highlands – one of the top teams in Northern Kentucky this spring.

Moeller (19-6), the No. 2 seed in the Southwest District, awaits the winner of  today’s Northwest versus Walnut Hills in its sectional tournament opener at 5 p.m. Thursday at Schuler Park in Loveland.  Moeller has not lost since a 3-2 setback to Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy on April 20.  La Salle (10-14) opens GCL South postseason play today, traveling to Loveland to face the Eastern Cincinnati Conference co-champion Tigers at 5 p.m.  Loveland (15-9) tied Milford at 11-3 in the ECC, but has lost two consecutive games – falling to Colerain, 9-6, in its last game on Saturday.  La Salle has lost its last five games.

St. Xavier (15-8), which finished a game behind Moeller in the GCL South after winning the league title outright last spring, will play either Sycamore or Talawanda at 5 p.m. Thursday in its tournament opener.  The Bombers defeated Lakota East, 7-5, on Monday in a tune-up game for the postseason.  Elder (17-8), which is 15-1 against non-GCL South competition this spring, will oppose either Anderson or Middletown at 5 p.m. Thursday in its first game.  The Panthers have won two straight and three of their last four entering the tournament.
