Moeller, St. X In Top Three At Mason ; Elder, La Salle 1-2 At WW

One week after finishing within four points of each other at the Greater Catholic League South Division Track & field Championships, Moeller and St. Xavier were at it again at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I District Meet held last week at Mason High School.  Moeller, which won its first GCL South championship since 2004, totaled 108 points to finish second behind Mason’s winning 114 team score in the final standings.  The Crusaders were just three points ahead of St. Xavier’s 105 after winding up four points better than the Bombers in the earlier GCL meet that came down to the final event.

The GCL South was equally as strong in the DI District held at Winton Woods, as Elder and La Salle wound up with the top two spots, earning 131 and 125points, respectively.  Hard to imagine a more consistent performance in track & field, as Elder and La Salle had a regional qualifier in every event.   The top four finishers in each event qualify for this week’s regional meet that is being held at Wayne High School in Huber Heights.  Finals in four events opened the meet Wednesday night, with the meet set to continue at 5 p.m. Friday.

Senior Ryan Smith, named the GCL South Field Athletic of the Year after winning two events last Friday at La Salle, did it again in the district meet – finishing first in the discus and shot put.   GCL South athletes dominated the field events, with John Carr of St. Xavier winning the long jump; St. Xavier’s Sean Mesue coming in second behind Smith in the discus, with Nick Marsh of Moeller fourth; Bobby Jefferson of St. Xavier earning fourth in the shot; and Dene White and Eric Wills of Moeller finishing first and third, respectively, in the high jump.

Henry Young of St. Xavier turned in another impressive meet, winning both the 100 and 200 meters.  Young set a school record in the 100 at the GCL South meet, and also was part of a school record-setting team in the 4x100 relay.  Teammate BJ Ferguson came in fourth in the 200 to qualify.  The Bombers’ 4x800 relay team of Matthew Hoak, Tommy Walters, Peter Dauenhauer and Nick Mills came in second in the event to earn a regional berth.    Duanhauer’s second-place finish in the 3200 also was good enough for regionals.   Mills also qualified as an individual in the 1600.  St. Xavier’s 4x400 relay team of BJ Ferguson, TJ Ahrens, King Hudson and Young advanced to the regional meeting after a second-place finish.

Charles Sanders of Elder and Cameron Willis of La Salle each won two individual events in the district meet at Winton Woods.  Sanders captured the 100 and 200 meters, while Willis finished first in the 400 and the high jump.  The schools traded spots in two relay events, with Elder finishing first and La Salle second in the 1600, and then La Salle crossing the finish line ahead of the Panthers in the 3,200.  Braedy Murphy of Elder finished first in the shot put.

Other regional qualifiers from Elder and La Salle, listed by event and their district meet finish, are:  110 Hurdles – 2. Darryl Hubbard (La Salle); 3. Quinn Ealy (La Salle);  4x200 Relay – 4.
