Crusaders Post Key Road Victory At St. Xavier Tuesday Night

Ben Hegge, Parker Grinstead and Jake Renneker each scored goals to lead Moeller to a 3-1 victory against St. Xavier in a key Greater Catholic League South Division soccer match Tuesday night at St. Xavier High School.  The win kept Moeller unbeaten in 11 matches and moved the Crusaders into sole possession of first place in the league standings.  The teams were tied at 2-0-1 in the GCL South entering the match, having tied, 1-1, in the first meeting on September4 at the University of Cincinnati’s Gettler Stadium.

Hegge’s goal was his league-leading ninth of the season, to go along with four assists and a GCL South-best 22 points for the Crusaders’ senior midfielder.  St. Xavier senior midfielder Craig Wellens, second in the league in scoring with 20 points, scored the lone goal for the Bombers (7-2-3, 2-1-1 GCL South).  Moeller also got a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Parker Grinstead, as well as a goal from senior defenseman Jake Renneker.

Moeller (10-0-1, 3-0-1), No. 2 in this week’s Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I poll behind Cleveland St. Ignatius, extended its unbeaten streak in the GCL South to 10 games.  The Crusaders, who finished 5-0-1 last season to earn the league title, have not lost a GCL South match since falling at La Salle, 3-0, in the regular-season finale on October 11, 2016.  Moeller also tied La Salle, 1-1, last September.  St. Xavier is No. 7 in this week’s statewide coaches’ poll.  Moeller and St. Xavier hold down the top two spots, respectively, in The Enquirer’s Division I poll.
