GCL South Teams One Win Away From Regional Final Showdown

Greater Catholic League South Division members Moeller and St. Xavier will oppose two perennial Eastern Cincinnati conference powers Anderson and Turpin, respectively, in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Boys’ Soccer Tournament tonight in what is expected to be rainy and windy weather conditions.  If victorious, Moeller and St. Xavier would advance to meet for the third times this season in Saturday’s regional final at a site to be announced with a berth in the OHSAA Final Four on the line.

But first things first.  Moeller (16-1-3), which has outscored its four postseason opponents by a combined 16-0 score and has recorded a school single-season record with 12 shutouts, must get past Anderson (13-3-2) – which defeated St. Xavier, 2-1, in overtime in last year’s regional semifinals.  The Redskins enter tonight’s 7 p.m. match at Lebanon Junior High School having won four straight matches, including a 2-1 overtime victory against defending Division I state champion Beavercreek in the district final last week.  Moeller is coming off a 2-0 win against Mason in the district final last week.

By facing Moeller tonight, Anderson will have played the entire GCL South this season.  The Redskins lost to St. Xavier, 2-1, on August 21, then posted an 8-1 win against Elder on September 22, before opening the postseason with a 2-0 victory against La Salle.

St. Xavier (13-3-3), unbeaten in October with six consecutive victories, will be opposed by Turpin (15-1-3)  – which has only dropped one match this season, 4-0, to ECC regular-season champion Loveland in the last match before the playoffs.  The match is 7 p.m. at Monroe High School.  St. Xavier is coming off a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Dayton Carroll in the district final, outscoring Carroll, 5-4,  on penalty kicks.  Turpin beat Springboro, 1-0, in its district final to advance.   St. Xavier did not play Turpin during the regular season.

If Moeller and St. Xavier both win, the GCL South rivals would meet for the third time this season.  The two teams played to a 1-1 tie on September 4 at University of Cincinnati’s Gettler Stadium, and then Moeller captured a 3-1 victory at St. Xavier on September 25 to clinch its second straight GCL South championship.
