Big Weekend Ahead For GCL South Basketball Teams

Jaylen Lemons, Nolan Enzweiler and Jeff Queen combined to score all but nine of their team’s points to help La Salle post a 46-36 victory over Lakota West Tuesday night in a non-conference basketball game at La Salle.  Lemons led the way with 14 points and five steals, while Enzweiler added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Queen contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists to help the Lancers snap a brief two-game losing streak and even their record.

La Salle (3-3) played solid defense against West – forcing 18 turnovers and limiting the Firebirds to 33.3 percent shooting (14-of-42) from the field, including just 3-of-14 from three-point range.  The Lancers have two more games this week, hosting Centerville at 7:30 tonight before traveling to Kings at 7:30 Saturday night.  La Salle was the lone Greater Catholic League South Division team in action Tuesday, but the other three league teams also are preparing for busy weekends.

Moeller (4-0), the defending Ohio Division I state champion currently ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll, faces Covington Catholic at 7:30 tonight at the Brisben Family Education Center on the school’s Montgomery Road campus.  CovCath is one of only three teams to defeat the Crusaders last season, winning 58-53 last December in Park Hills, Ky.  Moeller puts its 24-game winning streak on the line against the CovCath (6-2), the defending Kentucky state hoops champion.  CovCath is coming off a 40-38 loss to undefeated Taft last weekend, while Moeller has won its first four games by 22 or more points.

Moeller also plays Saturday, traveling to meet Wilmington at 4:30 that afternoon.

St. Xavier (3-1), which moved up to No. 6 this week in The Enquirer’s DI coaches’ poll, hosts West Clermont at 7:30 tonight.  Then, the Bombers travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University to oppose Westerville North at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.  No. 9 Elder (4-3), winner of two straight, is off until Saturday when the Panthers host GCL Co-Ed member Roger Bacon at 7:30 p.m. at The Pit in Price Hill.  All GCL South teams are ranked this week, with La Salle at No. 10.
