St. Xavier Continues Reign Over GCL DI Swimming

Bombers, Ursuline Academy Successfully Defend Respective Titles

St. Xavier won all 11 events – eight individual and three relays – in the swimming portion of the 2019 GCL  & GGCL Division I Swimming and Diving Championships held Wednesday night at Keating Natatorium on the St. Xavier High School campus to continue its reign over the Greater Catholic South Division.  The AquaBombers, who are the 10-time defending DI state champions, have now won 74 league meets overall and 59 straight, as boys’ and girls’ league teams came inside from record-breaking temperatures and wind chill to put forth record-breaking performances of their own.

Ursuline Academy also successful defend its league crown, winning the Girls’ Greater Catholic League championship for the fourth year in a row.  The Lions, who won the DI state title in 2013-14, have now won five of the last six league titles.  The GGCL standings were Ursuline (388 points), followed by St. Ursula Academy (289), Seton (207), Mercy McAuley (198) and Mount Notre Dame (107).

Junior Kyle Seilkop was named the GCL Swimmer of the Meet on the boys’ side after setting records in winning the 200 and 500 freestyle events.  Overall, St. Xavier had 11 first-place finishes, seven runners-up and seven third-place finishers.  St. Xavier claimed the top four spots in four different individual events. The AquaBombers finished with a team score of 547, followed by Moeller (260), Elder (190) and La Salle (157).  The only event St. Xavier did not win was the 1-meter diving held earlier, with Moeller junior Gavin Osterday winning with a score of 252.65.

St. Xavier opened the swimming portion of the meet by capturing the 200 Medley Relay, with sophomore Conall Kellner, freshman Christopher Perera, seniors Drew Morstadt and Evan Schell finishing with a time of 1:30.00.  Seilkop then followed with his record-setting performance of 1:42.11 to win the 200 Freestyle, before junior Jamie Donovan led a 1-4 sweep in the 200 Individual Medley (1:56.75), Morstadt claimed the 50 Freestyle (22.41) and Donovan won the 100 Butterfly (52.59).  Donovan also was part of two winning relay teams, going 4-of-4 on the night.

Senior Christian Wall continued the St. Xavier dominance by winning the 100 Freestyle (48.04) before Seilkop returned to the podium by establishing a GCL record in the 500 Freestyle, with a time of 4:36.13.  Wall, sophomore Cooper Williams, Donovan and Morstadt took the 200 Freestyle Relay, swimming a personal best of 1:28.21, before Kellner captured the 100 Backstroke and senior Ted Lockett improved his time 15 second from last year to finish first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:00.76).  The team of junior Brady Holcomb, junior R.J. Myers, Donovan and Wall capped the evening by winning the 400 Freestyle Relay in 3:13.17.

Up next is the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Sectional Championships to be held next week.
